I found an old copy of one of our local car magazines which listed the prices of the available Lotus cars way back in 1989.
As far as I know there were only 10 or so Excels sold here, and only one SA - not surprising at the price!
The exchange rate from ZAR to GBP in 1989 was around 4.3 which would have made the price around GBP52,325.00 and then add on 12% GST and you're at GBP 58,604.00.....

Yes but what an engine it turned out to be! Not the most powerful, but very efficient with scope for further improvement using fuel injection. I can’t think of an engine I’d rather sit behind. Just right for the road.
