Cam cover gaskets - sealant??

Post by marky »

I am finally getting around to painting the cam covers - had the paint for ages but not the time to do it!
I have new gaskets from SJ. It seems there are three possible options:_
1. no sealant
2. sealant between covers and gasket only
3. sealant on both sides of gasket

what do members recommend?

I presume it is also important not to over-tighten the bolts.

Mark.

I used a small amount of Blue Hylomar to stick the gaskets to the cam covers and than applied a thin coat to the cam carriers before fitting the cam covers. 100% leak free

Any silicone (that withstands oil) on both sides of the gaskets if it's the LC cam covers.
I used some RTV from SJ and it has worked perfectly.
Blue hylomar will work but it doesn't dry that much inside wich could leave some traces in the oil and could clog up the channels.
If you use Hylomar make sure to only use a thin layer!

Thanks for that - I have some pro seal RTV hi temp silicone left over from another job - sounds like it would be ideal for this. Will use a small amount both sides.

Update - that worked a treat - road tested and a really good seal. Used VHT red wrinkle paint on the covers - really nice finish - couldn't bring myself to sand off the decals at first!
