Clutch master cylinder removal

I don't see what the problem is, removing the clutch master cylinder is pretty straight forward, with not much in the way. A deep socket, and maybe an extension with a swivel is all it takes and (for a Lotus) there is hardly anything iin the way.

Compare that with the brakeservo, where you have to take the instrument cluster out, and then still have to work by feel and with most of the nuts obstructed by other parts

Nah, just sit down on the garagefloor and work round the doorpost. No need to disappear upside down in the footwell, get a longer extension and give that left hand something to do

This might help a bit.

Photo shows the 2 holes for the clutch master cylinder studs to pass through the bulkhead.



The Clovis pin is just a pin that goes through the pedal and clutch rod. This is held in by a spring Clevis clip as here - https://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/clevis-p ... lsrc=aw.ds

Just pull this out of the pin and pin will easily push out.

Thanks Alan. It's the Retaining Nuts & Clevis Pin, inside I am finding difficult to see where they are.

I have to say, after replacing the master cylinder and using the 'Lotus position' to do it and then found I had to remove the Pedal box assembly as the fault was in fact a bent clutch pedal and having done that by removing the dash, removing the dash wins every time, it's so easy!

The last thing I want to do is remove the Dash.
Am I looking in the wrong place is it outside of the Pedal Box, on the Righthand side?

Yes it is. if you already have the instruments out, taking the rest of the dash out is really very easy.. took me about 15 mins, and 10 to put it back. Two screws each side, one in the middle and two on the transmission tunnel that's all that holds it in, the steering wheel has to come off as well and the gearstick, neither are a problem. Not sure what the fuss is about with removing it, makes life a LOT easier

I have removed the Slave Cylinder & Hose, very easy job to do with the Car on Axle Stands.

My problem is still trying to get the Master Cylinder out. I can't see it let alone remove the Clip & Pin, & then the Retaining Nuts.
I have even taken out the Seat, to give more room & the Fuse Cover also the Side Panel.

Think it's my age ( 70+ ) stopping me getting in the right position.
I wish I could just get someone that has done the Removal & Install of the Master Cylinder before to just do that bit for me. I wouldn't
even mind paying whatever it costs to do that part for me. I can manage the rest myself.

I have managed to find a New Master Cylinder ( with the 2 Studs at 12 & 6 ) + the Slave & Braided Hose for £154 Delivered.

Looks like you're trying to work from inside the car, don't.

Try sitting on the garagefloor on a piece of cardboard, legs under the door and work from outside, mostly with your left hand. Now all the bits are on eye level
You'll need a flashlight, needle nose pliers, a deep 13mm socket on a swivel and with a long 16-20" extension. Penetration oil doesn't hurt either

turn the clevis so that you can pull the hairsping out, if the pliers don't work get something with a hook through the closed end, push out the pin next and collect the washer
manipulate the socket on the nut of the slave, either by feel or by eye, keep some prrsure on the extension so the socket doesn't disengage and get the buggers off

I thought you had to get into some funny position inside, that's why I took the Seat out.
Didn't think you could reach just by sitting on the floor outside.
Tried taking some photos but the Fuse & Relay Board kept getting in the way. Even wedged the Pedal down, but still couldn't see Clip.
Will try again tomorrow.
