ICE detection sensor

Recent removal of dash revealed that the plug for the LED Ice sensor display was unplugged.
Plugged it in and just got a constant Red LED lit. Tracked to the sensor in the N/S headlight being cut off hence open circuit.
New sensors are available, but around £65.00 ( no doubt plus VAT and postage).
Figuring that the sensor was most likely same technology as on more recent cars ( Temp dependant resistor?), I bought one of these off Ebay for less than £5:00

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373647302015 ... %3A2047675

Plugged in today, and the system seems to be working. Green light for around 10 seconds, then nothing ( as it should be at todays temperature).

Sometime in the next couple of days, I'll extend the wires so I can put the sensor in the garage Fridge / freezer and see if I seem to have full function.

Fingers crossed, but so far , so good.

Co2 fire extinguishers or freeze spray let you do it in situ :)

Or a cup melting ice from the freezer.

BTW, a cup of crushed ice with water will be precisely 32 degrees F
The ice can be any temp below freezing, but the presence of a volume of water means that it cannot be below freezing

What they used to use to calibrate instruments back in the day

Anyway, no need to stick it in the fridge....

I can report this sensor is working at the extremes.
At today's ambient, goes through check process, then all is out.
At -18 Deg, red light is on. (I'll be fine if I ever take a wrong turning and find myself in Finland 😀❄️❄️❄️).
Calibration around zero doesn't look quiet right ( no lights after check sequence at around 2 Deg), but if that ultimately concerns me, putting a variable resistor in the circuit should allow proper calibration.

If it is a thermistor there are several different base resistances. if someone were to measure the stock device at room temp it would give a clue
