For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Replacement alternator

Post by lambert.john »

Does anyone know if a straightforward replacement can be obtained? Seven years ago I drew a blank when mine failed and had to send it away for refurbishment. It has now failed again! Or is a 7year lifespan acceptable?

Without trawling all the slots; easiest £70+vat from LB. Non standard new replacement

SJSports new genuine OEM £240

Absolutely make sure you are ordering the right one! I had an alternator failure 4 years ago, I ordered a replacement from SJ, but it was the wrong one - it was for the non-SE engine, and doesn't fit the SE engine. SJ told me they didn't have alternators for the SE (at the time, might have changed??), so I called Lotusbits who had no problem supplying a refurbed correct alternator for the SE.

Still, I can't believe this is a Lotus-specific special part, so it must have a manufacturer part number that is in common with something else?

I have seen some of the esprit owners use a bosch al49x alternator with casing holes being realigned.

Many thanks for the replies. On this occasion I seem to be in luck. The charging issue was down to a faulty wiring connection. I'm now back on the road without too much expense!
