Dash illumination filters

For all those wiring gremlins we love, this is the place to discuss them.

Dash illumination filters

Post by Hawaiis0 »

My car has Green coloured sleeves over the filaments (bulbs) in the dash instruments to create the ambient glow.

Anyone know where to get new ones?

Thanks for that.

£2 a pop is extortion. Fleabay to the rescue.

Edit - £6 for postage is bonkers

Just found these - pack of 10 - £7 delivered

Or, go to a craft shop and buy a pot of green glass paint. It does the same job.

Swapped mine all out for LED bulbs, no longer need to worry about them burning out, getting hot, or adding significant load to the electrical system. You can even make each gauge a different color if you wanted. My Speedo is white, the rest red to draw my eye to the speedo first - which is now no longer working (again), LoL. But I can read the odometer in a pinch without any issue!!!

'Ray-s' can you give more details of these LED Dial Bulbs ie. Type are they caped or not Wattage and if they come in different colours. A supplier and picture would be great to ensure I get the correct ones. Thanks.

Ian

The LEDs can come in most colours.

Just search for LED BA9s for the larger bayonet instrument ones and 286 for the smaller 'blade' ones.

I have just removed all my LEDs because they keep burning out and I had no night illumination. This may have been because my dimmer switch is missing so max current is being supplied all the time which may have been bad.

If I am correct you will have no dimming control with LEDs as they are either on or off unless you use a pulse modulator in place of the dimmer.

I have now found that incandescent versions are available in blue, green yellow etc

I've just bought a set of LEDs to illuminate my instruments from the same people who supplied my headlight LEDS - classiccarleds.co.uk. They are available in warm white which replicates the look of the original filament bulbs - on my car there are no colour filters. I'm also reinstating my instrument rheostat as these LEDS do work with one, unlike many others as Stu says. I'm hoping they last longer than Stu's bulbs as I don't want to get the dash out again anytime soon, but they are rated at 30,000 hours life.

Cheers, Richard

If you wanna stick with the original T5 bulbs they are as cheap as chips from eBay/ China ($A1.00 or thereabouts for 10 incl postage).

Corolla models circa 2000 (eg AE112) use the same little green hoods. Easily sourced from wreckers
