...very loud, shrill and constant when running! Only started a couple of days ago. Could this be the cambelt tensioner bearing fault I've read about?
Had the cambelt changed (very professionally) by Miles Wilkins a few months and 1000 miles ago. Will be a blow if there's a problem with it already.

Sounds like the tensioner bearing to me. I also had a well known specialist change my cambelt and they fitted a bad bearing (it appears a batch were made without being properly greased), but as soon as I let them know they replaced it right away.
If the bearing seizes then the cambelt will be in trouble very quickly. Therefore I'd suggest you replace the bearing without delay.

I had my cambelt done by MW and had the same problem. I guess you must be relatively local to me Malcolm? I'm in Waterlooville / Portsmouth. It would be interesting to hear what you make of Miles and Ian.

These bad bearings appear to have been fitted/supplied by a number of our 'usual' sources. So I wouldn't apportion blame to any one of them, rather it looks like a bad batch from the manufacturer that difficult to spot when fitted, but shows up soon after.

Didn't think anyone was apportioning blame, Tony. I only mentioned who fitted it to underline the fitting would have been carried out to 100% standard, by someone totally experienced and competent with the marque and model.
Otherwise, there might be assumptions the belt had been fitted by me or a 'mainstream' mechanic. Which would send the thread off in all sorts of wasted directions.
