Caliper piston

Post by Grant »

Hi,

I need to change one of my front caliper pistons. I want to avoid loosing too much break fluid and I dont want to use a clamp on the break hose. Can anyone suggest how I can stop all the break fluid draining out the master cylinder whilst I work on the caliper.

Thanks

Grant

Remove all the fluid in the reservoir with a syringe. Take the opportunity to replace with fresh fluid/bleed all brakes.

Press the brake pedal half way down and hold in that position while the system is open.

I have a selection of male and female blanking plugs, made from old brake pipes ( cut through pipe about an inch from the fitting, clamp pipe flat in a vice, then fold back on itself).
Sure if you called into a local "proper old style garage", they'd be only too please to pass over an old pipe ( just get the right size fittings).
In the few seconds it takes to pull the pipe out the caliper after loosening the and fitting the blank, you loose very little fluid.

There really isn't any problem with clamping the flexi you know.
If you dont have the proper tool, use a pair of vice grips with a socket over each jaw.
Kind regards

Unless of course the flexi is a stainless braided one or something similar, then there is a problem clamping it.

Managed to change piston and replace slider seals etc. In the end I clamped the hose. Disconneting the bracket that holds the brake hose to the caliper was a bit of a challenge, probably never been removed since it was built. Found load of sticky gunge behind the piston, probably why it wasn't returning fully. Now all ok.
