hi
i have just recently bought a 1990 excel
the car is very nice but has the start of headlining problems and is starting to
sag
i have seen the threads about doing it yourself and that is the route i am going
to down but just a quick question what is the approximate cost of the materials
all in
i am going to renew it all plus the wee bits that go down towards the rear window

headlining material costs

Re: headlining material costs
There is a choice of foam backed material from Woolies, (no not that one, it's gone).
Get sufficient to cover mistakes, all about £25.
Glue for spraying on foam, £5 a can from Woolies.
Contact adhesive from Screwfix, Evostik 328, about £15 . I think.
And most important new 12" wide foam paint roller, £5.
It really is a fairly simple process.
All of the GRP mouldings come off, and unless it's been previosly stuck/bodged the original stuff is only glued on the back of the moulding, this is easier to do, and it avoids bumps, 'cos it's not stuck all over.
Roof is a bit trickier, scrape old stuff off gently, so as not disturb the foil.
cut two bits, behind and in front of roll bar moulding.
apply thixo adhesive to roof, let in go tacky, meanwhile spray foam material with spray adhesive.
Get a friend, to contact the first inch at the front and back, use the foam roller to smooth the material into place.
Mines been done for a few years now, still perfect.

Although I've not done this myself, here's detailed step-by-step instructions that sound pretty comprehensive:

Re: headlining material costs
Hi,
I replaced my headlining some time ago following the excellent instructions in the link suggested by tonypoll.
My mother is handy with sewing machine so finished job is indistinguishable from original, even the visors.
Two pair of hands makes the job straight forward.
Make sure you clean off all bits of foam and glue as they will show.
Spray on adhesive from woolies is very good.
I used sponge rollers to smooth on new fabric on all parts don't be tempted to use your fingers in corners etc. as it may leave dimples.
Use a credit card to tuck headlining in were required (along rear edge/screen for example).

Re: headlining material costs
I cheated along the top edge of the rear screen and glued the fabric to a length of plastic edging channel so that I could guarantee to get the back edge tidy. Works a treat.
