Seat Security

Post by colinplod »

Hi
My 91 Excel's seats need tightening, ie the upright wobbles. I intent to use the car on track days in the summer and think they should be more secure. Anyone know how easy it is. Also I've seen seat harnesses that hook onto eye bolts where the current seat belts attach, does anyone know if I replace the bolts with the eye bolts I could use both sets of belts (NOT AT THE SAME TIME)

Great forum so a message for you all (copied from another site)

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, non-addictive, gender-neutral celebration of the winter solstice holiday, practiced within the traditions of the religious persuasion of your choice, or secular practices of your choice (with respect for the religious /secular persuasions and /or traditions of others or their choice not to practice such traditions at all).*

Furthermore, I offer my (non-binding) best wishes for the onset of the generally accepted calendar year of 2007, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped improve the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (Which is not to imply that United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is any greater than any other country). These wishes are offered without regard to the race, creed, colour, age, physical ability, choice of computer platform or sexual preference of the wishee.

Happy (if happiness is in your belief system) Holidays (if you recognize them).

* This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It implies no promises by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for his or herself or others, is void where prohibited by law and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish expires within one year or until the issuance of a subsequent holiday greeting, whichever comes first.

Unless the design of the reclining mechanism changed since 1983 there is some adjustment available in the security of the backrest. The hard part is getting the rusty bolts undone from under the seat-tracks in order to get the seat out of the car.

I don't think there is enough room to put eye-bolts in to the normal lap-strap locations, but if you get a harness that has plates for the strap ends, and longer bolts, plus a bit of ingenuity in making sure both sets of lapstrap plates can swivel around the bolt, you should be able to use the old mounting points.

When using the original 3-point belt just swivel the 4-point plates around so they point backwards and tuck the straps under the carpet. No-one will know it's there, although I have had back-seat pasengers complain about the shoulder straps they could feel under the rear seat....

If you buy this week's Autosport magazine you'll also get a copy of the 2007 Demon Tweeks catalogue, which has 17 pages of harnesses. Should be easy to pick out one with the right fittings.

Got the passenger seat out no probs, At the NEC i loked at various harnesses. I'm going to get on that clips onto eye bolts, which I'll fit to replace the standards bolts fixing the fittings either side of the seat. The back harness fits onto one of the rear seat mounts. Therefore when not needed everything unclips and you use normal belts. Total cost is going to be about £65. :D
