Looking for a LHD left door mirror
I am looking to replace the left door mirror assembly on a LHD 88 Excel. Any leads or anyone know where I might source one?

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
Worth checking with Lotusbits first, they may have one.
The door mirror for these cars was borrowed from the Citroen CX. This might make you think they could be found in any scrapyard, but the same ones are also fitted to Esprit, several Aston Martins, a couple of TVRs, and even the Jaguar XJ220. Hence they are in high demand. Maybe a scrapyard in France...

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
Depends if it is an early or late 88. The late 88 (89 model year) will have the Citroen mirrors - so easier to find for LHD, early 88 cars will have the Rover SD1 derived mirrors (through glass mounted) - very hard to find, even in RHD fit.

Question?
What is the difference between LHD and RHD mirrors?

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
I'd be amazed if there was any difference in the mirror, regardless of whether the car is LHD or RHD.DavidOliver wrote: ↑Wed Aug 23, 2023 11:25Question?

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
Alan - my mirror looks just like the one in the picture of the red car in your avitar.
Regarding any differrence between a LHD LH mirror and a RHD LH mirror, I am not sure regarding the Lotus, but on many other cars if the car is LHD, the LH mirror does not angle in as much as a LH mirror on a RHD car.

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
Here are the three mirrors. I think it's Citroen on the left, Rover on the right and I have no idea what the mirrors are from on my car in the middle. Mine is also a 1988
Cheers, Phil

The ones on the centre car are Rover SD1. If you have a look at the following ebay listing, you will see the shape (they are manual ones though).

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
The way to check if there is a difference or not between LHD and RHD mirrors is to sit in the passenger seat of a RHD, in a seat position similar to the drivers seat and (with a mate) operate the electric position control of the left door mirror and see if you get sufficient adjustment for rear viewing.
Bear in mind that the mirror angle depends on the distance between the mirror and drivers head which in the Excel tends to be greater ( distance not head) than most cars and so the angle is considerably less and consequently no need for differences between LHD and RHD mirrors.

Re: Looking for a LHD left door mirror
So in the photo above, the mirrors on both the center and right Excels are BOTH Rover SD1 mirrors? Mine kind of look like the ones on the red Excel in the center except mine droop down. They also fit rather loosely. They seem to work just fine, tho. Not having the opportunity to become familiar with other Excels, I've wondered if they were correct or if they were reinstalled incorrectly by a body shop when it was repainted.
What car would these have been borrowed from?
