window frame time!

Post by CHRISYD »

Well, I finally bit the bullet today and started to replace my n/s window frame. Quite simple to remove really. The frame was bolted straight to the beam with no spacers or washers so at least when it comes to refitting, it SHOULD be simple to ajust by basically starting from scratch with washers. what I did notice was the rear most fixing at the top (circular captive) was about 1.5" below the one on the old frame when placed on top so I guess I can just make a new hole in the door to match. I also dropped a bo****k by not remembering the "how to" PDF on here so bonded the quarter glass in before refitting and apparently must be done when frame is fitted and adjusted. I will find out tomorrow how it fits.

Window frame now in with new door seal. some of the square frame fixing holes were 1 cm off the beam holes and those that were in line needed shims. Not quite as difficult to get to fit but not easy either. Havent checked for water tightness yet until various sealants have dried. There does seem to be a gap at the rear of the door where the frame comes out of the door itself, top nice and tight as is bottom. will have to see what happens tomorrow after water test.

Was it one of the new ones you have fitted? Sounds like you've done a good job!

Yes, one from Angus last year. She was booked in to SJ in aug to do it but saved myself £450! Door fit is nice and tight all round except for the bit where the frame leaves the door iself for about 4" before being tight for the rest of way to the top. I did notice that I must have bonded the quarter glass in the frame too close to the outside of the frame as the plastic surround around the mirror doesn't sit pressing against the frame like it used to. only noticeable when door open.

I dropped my new frames off at GST last Friday on my way to my Mum's funeral in North Norfolk. So waiting for the lockdown to end before mine are fitted.

Tried the dreaded water test today. once finished, after about 5 mins there were a couple of drips on the seat edge. looks like water is sitting on top of the seal and then seeping past the frame.

Quite a wind building this morning so went "shopping" to check for wind noise, frame flutter etc. Non of either  only some wind around the mirror after about 60mph so well chuffed. With regards to the gap on the frame just above the door at the rear, Dad found some self adhesive rubber "tape" that is exactly 20mm wide the same as the frame and 2mm thick so im going to try and stick that round the frame inner edge just to nip the gap up a bit more.

Perhaps people have added them themselves in the past?

No Pete is correct.
There are 2 small wedge seal ramps on each door, but I am not wise enough to state their purpose.

Chap 11.01 of the parts manual shows them
