Monaco 2012 ?

Post by amarshall »

An idea that floated itself over the weekend is a run to Monaco in 2012 for the Historic GP to celebrate 30 years since the Excel was launched, mark 20 years since the last one was built and commemorate 30 years since ACBC died.

No details yet, but the route would probably take in the Milau bridge, some good roads and better restaurants. the Historic GP is usually 2-3 weeks before the F1 circus hits town so should be in early May. We'd try to hook up with Classic Team Lotus at some point over the weekend and try to sweet-talk the ACM into some sort of event between the races if possible.

If you could be interested in this trip, please post on this thread (not a firm commitment, just an idea of numbers). Any suggestions for additional "must see" locations etc. are welcome, but I will exercise moderator's privilege and delete any posts which do not directly address participation in the event.

It looks like the race weekend is 30th April to 2nd May (and ACBC's birthday is 19th May btw)

I'm interested - done the Milau bridge by motorcycle last year and had a beautiful ride down there. I'm OK with camping, but hotels there should be pretty good value.

Well, if I was right all the time I'd get to be predictable!

SWMBO will not "do" camping.....but I think some hotel deals might be arranged if we do things well in advance.

Chalk us down as interested too. (Estimated fuel cost for round trip at today's prices = £400 !)

During the highly successful Dutch trip last weekend, Angus mentioned the Monaco 2012 proposal, and we are definitely interested in taking our Elite there, to recreate the scene from 1980 when it was the Team Essex Lotus roadcar for ACBC to use on GP weekends. Such a long trip will require quite a bit of planning, and we would not want to do more than 250-mile hops en-route.

Shall we get this thread going again? Possibly invite our new Dutch, German and Belgian Lotus friends to meet us there? And the French of course. Possibly have a dedicated day when we take the Elites/Eclats/Excels in a convoy up the Col de Turini?

Definitely time to get this thread going again. I'm in touch with the company that you recommended, Leigh, and we're working on the plan for the UK contingent.

Just a thought, Angus. If the UK contingent wants to traverse the Millau viaduct (yes please), then as this is somewhat west of the main routes to Monaco, we would certainly prefer one of the Portsmouth ferry routes, probably to Caen or possibly St Malo. We did Portsmouth/Caen last Christmas, using the overnight service to give us a nice route down to the Alps, and it was a very good crossing.

Sounds a fun idea!! Although my 2012 holiday budget has already taken a bit of a hit with the cost of tickets to the Olympics :(

A further thought - start off by going from Portsmouth/Plymouth to Santander/Bilbao overnight and then drive through the mountains across the Spain/France border to Pau ?
