Re: Alternator Emergency
When my alternator went "on the blink" I had to get it reconditioned. Like you, I first ordered a replacement which turned out to be the wrong one. I' m sorry; I know this doesn't help, much!

Re: 1987 build date, but what month?
My car is significantly older then yours, Robert, I'm afraid. You should find Spav's "Milestones" thread of interest; sn 2332 (the first with cross drilled crank) was a March car, and sn 2457 - the first with strengthened rear body mounts - was a July car. Yours would have been built sometime betwee...

Re: 1987 build date, but what month?
I can confirm that, if you apply for a "certificate of provenance" from the archivist at Lotus, the information supplied includes the date of manufacture (my car was manufactured on 18 February 1987). It does come at a price, though; I paid £72 - including VAT - two years ago.

Re: Cam Belt Lifespan
The cost of a new cambelt seems to be going up! Time to replace mine and Paul Matty is quoting £82.28 plus VAT! Obviously, one doesn't wish to economise on such a vital component, but is this now the going rate?

Re: Spark plugs
I've always found the specified NGK plugs perfectly okay. I did try the iridium equivalents for two years but couldn't detect any real advantage.

Re: Chattering noise behind dash
I had a chattering noise behind the dash which bugged me for ages. Eventually, I found it; a cable mounting bracket under the bonnet - close to the bulkhead - which had come loose!

door lights
The light in my driver's door has disintegrated (and fused the whole circuit, as it happens)! Has anyone replaced one of these and can tell me from whom to get one? (I know I can try Lotusbits, but would prefer a new one if possible. I'm sure this can't be a Lotus specific part, can it?

Re: New Elite, Eclat and Excel book for 2016
Another satisfied customer, I received my copy today. It's a well presented volume, in my view, with loads of good pictures and is a comprehensive introduction to these cars, from a contemporary viewpoint. A lot is packed into its 144 pages including a brief introduction to the Lotus company and inc...

Re: 89 Excel in K & J Motors Cheshire
Guy Munday worked at the Stratton Motor Co (main dealer in Norfolk) for quite a while. He had a regular column in Club Lotus magazine, giving the dealership news.
He left earlier this year to set up as an independent (Cranley Sports and Classics Ltd).

Re: How much !!!!
This must be the car that received the Concours Award "Best in Show - 80s vehicles" at last month's Interclassics event at the Brussels Expo., (this reported in January's edition of Classic Motor Monthly). At least it helps to raise the profile of these cars!

Re: Wheel shake - thoughts
I would certainly double check the tyres, first (this being fairly straightforward). Even a different tread pattern can produce the symptoms you describe.

Re: Cam Belt Lifespan
I think a sense of perspective is needed, here. Lotus recommend a cambelt change every two years, or 20000 miles, whichever comes first. The cambelt tensioner bearing doesn't even feature in the service schedule, presumably because it is expected to last the life of the engine. On the advice of my m...
