Re: wobbley fuel gauge reading

Mine used to be pretty good but has recently gone wild. The cause (as far as I'm aware) is that there is meant to be a damper on the tank sensor, but this seems to fail / wear completely resulting in wild behaviour!

Re: Advice needed on Cam belt, otter switch, doors, wiper please

The otter switch should cut the fans in at 90 degrees and drop out again around 87 degress .. if it doesn't do something close to that I'd investigate sooner rather than later - even though it shouldn't boil at 100 due to the pressure in the cooling system raising boiling temp, if the cap is leaking...

Re: Miles per gallon

Mine always seems to read 4000-4500rpm - on the cam nicely, returning more smiles per gallon 8)

... well, when the water pump isn't pi55ing water everywhere that is!

Re: Timing Belts

I've never tried that one, but it's not particularly cheap compared to the Gates peugeot Mi16 belt that fits the Excel with HTD belt ..

Just check the crank pulley at every belt change ... if it feels sharp, change it before the belt is chewed and loses teeth!

They could've just stuck that engine in the Excel and rounded off a few corners ;-)

Re: Steering Rack Gaitors

I think it is Sierra but can't find the receipt! I bought a pair from Camberley Auto Factors ... the part number was the same as one supplied by SJ .. I just can't remember what it was!

Water pump rebuilds?

I woke my car from a 6 month hibernation .. let it tick over for a while, it warmed up nicely, fans cutting in from time to time .. So I took it on a trip to Halfords, got within quater of a mile and noticed the temp gauge went a bit wild - flicking 85-95 degrees. I tried the heater and it was hot s...

Re: Brake Calipers :x

Have you tried hooking it back up to the brake circuit, bleeding it and giving the brake pedal a shove (engine running for servo boost)? (err .. and put something in place to make sure the piston can't fire out spraying brake fluid everywhere!)

Re: Genuine oil filter

That filter pic shows it is made by Mahle .. the same maker as the pistons and liners in the Excel HC engine and Esprit SE turbo engine! I'd be happy with that! With respect to slick 50 .. I added it to a cortina once and to my surprise the tickover speed increased by about 100rpm, indicating to me ...

Re: carb adjustment

turn them in ... try half a turn or less at a time if you're on an emission tester. Go too far and the HC's will rise and the mixture gets too weak to burn properly.

Re: Binding brakes

My locknut had worked loose and allowed the rod to shorten - causing my brake pedal to drop .. if a PO / garage had spotted this and taken up too much slack it could cause a problem.

Re: pulling to the right under braking - ARB bushes ?

Have you checked the runout on the discs? They may look ok on brake rollers (MOT etc) at slow speed but judder can still show up at higher speeds. Another thing you could try is to swap the complete front hubs from left to right and see if the problem moves with the disc / hub. (I know you said it's...

Re: Camshaft seal to head

The official stuff to use is permabond A136 (from memory!) ... that's pretty hard to find, and expensive when you do find it!
