It's possible the engine may have been swapped.
What's the second letter in the engine number as given by the plate on the offside wheelarch under the bonnet?

Thanks Gents. Things have moved on a bit, I said I topped it up with a pint last week, took it out Saturday and rechecked the level and its back down to exactly the level it was at before I topped it up. Checked the garage floor and there is a nice greasy patch underneath it! There must be a leak s...

Thanks for the replies. Peddle is in correct position and fluid is full. Looks like a trip to the garage! Having a full reservoir is not conclusive. Have you tried rapidly pumping the pedal? If that works, it would suggest the hydraulics. Also, watch the slave cylinder and the pushrod while s...

My brakes are not progressive and have little feel to them. After the standard long pedal travel (which I still think is a mystery) the brake have little bite until you really press hard on them. Yes you can stamp on them and they will reward me with locking the rears and giving some embarrissing m...

Test-drive an M100 Elan. When you go back to your Excel, the brakes will seem wonderful in comparison ;) What don't you like about the standard Excel brakes? I'm finding them to be pretty good so far, but I'm using the car a lot, which does tend to keep everything free-d up and working as it should...

Not so. Mine is as steady as a rock.

I used to have a TVR 350i which used the same VDO gauge. That really did bounce all over the place. Lotus must have put some sort of damping in the circuit.

I will be going along in my Silver 89 SE, its my birthday treat! :P Will there be enough organisation to park us together or is it a bit hit and miss. :?: See you there Steve As far as I am aware, there is nothing organised for Excels. I think we would have to meet up somewhere off-site first and t...

You might find this interesting....

It's for an Esprit, but probably applies to Excel also.

Thermo couples work by having two different metals together. When heated the resistance changes due to charge between them. This promotes corrosion. I'm a chemist not a physisisit so perhaps someone else will get more techy. But a charge will allow corrosion, same principle when a car rusts. Fe2 an...

PS Isn't it fantastic that I can post on here, and a few minutes later I get a reply from the other side of the world. Amazing, and we take it all for granted. Agreed - and I'm also slightly amazed that all the letters are the same way up - maybe they flip over as they cross the equator ? :lo...

This isn't really a common problem unless the carburettors have have lost their earth strap and have been getting wet; allowing electrolysis to cause corrosion between the two different metals. Heat is always a help in these situations. Don't use a naked flame near the carburettors. Try loosening i...

Seized screws in carb body.

The air bleed screw on the rearmost barrel is well and truly seized. No amount of WD40 will release it. I had a similar problem on my S3 Esprit back in the late 80s. In that case I drilled a couple of small holes in the top of the screw and eased it out with the tips of some circlip pliers. Before I...

Spotted in Maidstone

A very nice looking late car in metallic blue spotted in Sandling Lane,
Penenden Heath. About 1230 last weekend (can't remember if Saturday or Sunday). I was in the scruffy Ford Probe in front.
Ring any bells with anyone?

Re: Stoneleigh 13th November 2005

I dont have many details but at least 3 members from this board are going. I gather it is at the showground opening at 10am on the 13th. If any can add any further information please do. I hope to be going if I can get an MOT by then. The Esprit crowd are meeting up somewhere and then arriving en m...
