Re: Rumble from the rear

Problem solved... :) Phil was right, the problem turned out to be quite badly seized rear calipers. My specialist, Andy at Qmech, commented that it was amazing that they worked at all, let alone passed the MOT... I had bought overhaul kits and pistons previously, with the intention of overha...

Re: Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir Cap

I bought a Land Rover Defender Reservoir cap after comparing mine with a friend's who has a Defender 110. It fits perfectly. Land Rover part number SJL100200 or equivalent. I'll put a post in the Alternative Parts thread with some photos. The Mini ones looked very similar and were a bit cheaper, but...

Re: Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir Cap

Thanks Richard, Stu, does it look like this? They appear to be similar across many Rovers of that era:

Brake Master Cylinder Reservoir Cap

Does anyone have a spare cap they are happy to sell? The electrical contacts on mine have corroded away, although the cap itself is OK.

Or has anybody found an alternative, with the level switch, which fits?

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Club Lotus Track Day 2023 27 May

I take a couple of days off the forum (babysitting duties) and all this happens! So glad to hear you're now on the mend Richard, that sounds nasty. You too Stu, hope you're feeling better. Just goes to show that Covid is still out there. To the survivors - glad you had a good time at Castle Combe. A...

Middlewick House Open Garden - 3rd & 4th June

This was a great event last year, we're going again this year on Saturday 3rd. Nick Mason (of Pink Floyd and Ferrari fame) and his wife Annette open up the gardens of their home, Middlewick House in Wiltshire, for charity. Only a couple of miles from Castle Combe. Lots of stalls with local produce e...

Re: Club Lotus Track Day 2023 27 May

Hi Richard, unfortunately Sharon and I won't be able to make it this year, we've got a family event that weekend. It's a pity because this is a great day out and not too far from us.

Re: Strong fuel smell.

The breather looks like clear (or probably yellow and crumbly by now) aquarium pipe, and goes from the rear of the filler cap mechanism (top left in the boot), over the top of the tank under the lip of the boot aperture, wraps round behind the battery, and exits the car through / behind the bumper. ...

The paint code for Calypso Red on my 1990 car is A23, I think that would most likely have been the same for yours.

Re: Winterbottom Run 2023

Hi Richard, everyone, Unfortunately I'll be unable to make the run this year, we are away on holiday on the weekend of the 19th / 20th August. We're also otherwise engaged on the weekend of Castle Combe :( On the plus side we are booked in for the Middlewick House Open Garden event on 3rd June. The ...

Re: Radiator Replacement - Chinese aluminium radiator

It looks like the radiator with the rubber mountings (A089K0147F) was introduced as late as 1991. The parts list note says ‘See S/B 1991/06’ against this item, and the rubber mounting bushes and associated brackets are all to be used with this radiator. Cheers, Richard Well, that might explain why ...

Re: Rumble from the rear

Bryan - I had exactly the same symptoms as you describe and thought it was wheel bearings. Felt like the rear wheel was shaped like a fifty pence piece. It wasn't constant - came and went. Turned out to be a sticking calliper - piston was seized. Changed callipers and discs as they were at minimum ...

Re: Rumble from the rear

Thank you gents for your thoughts, lots of things to check there. Will try to get onto it this weekend. Bash, I must admit I hadn't thought of uneven tyre wear, hopefully that's something easy to check by swapping them around. I had a Mazda 3 which used to "50p" the rear tyres quite rapidly, the sou...

Rumble from the rear

The Excel's rear, not mine! While out on Sunday, I noticed a rumble from the rear of the car, which seemed to pulse at about the same speed as wheel rotation, and caused a noticeable vibration through the car. It only occurred at 70mph or slightly over that. I think I've felt the beginnings o...
