I've found that even under full load the gearbox goes for the next ratio before the limiter is reached. That's only going to hit when holding a gear. I think it is the fact you are using engine power to turn the Aircon pump and carry the extra load, i was very sprised how heavy the pump was when i removed it. 10Kg on it's own, just posted one last week. Also, the pump clutch does engage until its... 1. switch one 2. Above the drop out rev limit....
