I've heard back from the archivist at Lotus, apparently the build date for my car is in October 1987. The build date being when the car is handed to Sales from Production. I guess there was not a huge demand for Excels back then, as my car was therefore sitting around for almost three months before ...

Depends exactly which belt you have fitted. If you have the B-prefix California spec genuine Lotus belt, (assuming you have HTD belt/sprockets), then Lotus have said 4yrs/24000 miles in an email to someone from this forum. Any other belt, and its the standard 2 yrs/24000 miles I'm afraid. Have a rea...

Paul, Get in touch with Chris Brown at the factory - one of his roles is keeper of the archives and he can check and see when your car was started. I would guess you car was probably started in December 87, if it was registered on 29th Jan 88, you have to allow time for PDI etc. at the dealer, ship...

How long did it take?

Does anyone know how long it took Lotus to build an Excel ? I need to know if mine was built in 1987 or 1988. It was first registered on 29th January 1988 and it has the J in the VIN which means it is '88 MY. The engine number indicates that the engine was built in October 1987. Can anyone shed any ...

Re: Stop that Wagon!

Never have been too happy with the brakes and it appears the calipers need to be replaced - I see Paul Matty quote £335 each - eek!!!. I'm trying to keep things original so what tips/ideas are there on changing the calipers and improving braking? All help appreciated - Graham  Try Classicar A...

BL**DY LOTUS! I've just received the invitation - maximum of 2 cars on show and we need to provide evidence of Public Liability Cover to exhibit. Anyone fancy an alternative competing event ? Do we have to have cars on display? Can we not just have an area of the car park for excels? Or does...

Tell her there will be others there in a similar position. That sometimes helps. They like having other women to chat with.

Re: Flippin Dunlops

When I bought the car last September I called up my friendly tyre fitter to get a quote on 215/50/15s not because I was in need of them but just because I was interested. He initially said the usual £120 but then said he had found a supplier that meant he could sell them to me fitted for £87 :) Now...

I take it you are getting the +2 from the heading at the top of the table? I think that should be + or _ 2, its just the underlining of the sentence has obliterated the '_' . This is confirmed under the heading 'Centrifugal Advance Characteristics' in the table. Assuming your distributor centrifugal...

I've given it the prod too, no issues yet, to be honest it must be a pretty rare thing to happen, an awful lot of owners and dealers use the pump of the throttle method In truth, the risk is probably pretty small. But why risk it at all? I've found it takes no time at all to adjust to using the cho...
