Re: Gear knob

It used to be that "top" gear was the one which enabled you to reach the car's top speed. In overdrive the car could not reach the same speed as the engine speed was too low. If you were to plot the engine power vs. the road speed for each gear and the power needed to push the car along at that spee...

Re: Classics for Carers - 3rd May

Bugger! Just saw this. The Excel is on the drive and I did clean it the other day (just before the rain returned) so it wouldn't have taken much effort to join in.

Re: Shocks - spherical bearings

First things that spring to mind are that the poly or rubber bushings damp out a lot of vibration which the spherical bearings do not so the suspension gets noisier. That squishiness that damps out the noise also leads to a bit of slop between the damper and suspension link so the spherical bearing ...

Re: Excel (and Lotus) magazine scans

So a Turbo Esprit was 2.15s quicker around the Lotus track than the Lotus turbine single seater. Interesting.

Re: THROBBING/PULSING

No, not really. The vacuum will build in one engine cycle at closed throttle as long as the pipe's volume is less than that of the cylinder. What I meant is that the pipe acts a bit like an organ pipe so will have a resonant frequency which amplifies the pulsing. If this were to coincide with the fr...

Re: THROBBING/PULSING

Why does the length of the hose make any difference? Pete Having thought about this I wonder if it's because the vacuum supply is pulsing, as it's from one runner only, Lotus didn't want this to excite a resonant frequency of the valve's spring and mass combination and the different hose lengths ar...

Re: windscreen washer jets

I bought some replacement jets from Halfords, they came with the rubber gaskets that fit underneath. I went for twin jet washers rather than the single ones which were fitted to the car.... That's interesting. My car has single-jet washers, yet the ones SJ Sportscars have on their website are twin-...

Re: Virtual meetings anyone?

Had another Zoom meeting with friends this evening and it was limited to 40minutes. It may be that your first meeting is unlimited but subsequent ones are.

Re: Virtual meetings anyone?

Had a Zoom meeting the other day and the time restriction was lifted during meet-up so we could, and did, go on for over 2 hours. We think it's their contribution to helping with dealing with Covid-19.

Re: Virtual meetings anyone?

I don't have any meetings local to me (that I know of) so would be up for this. Can't do Thursday evening as that is virtual pun night with some old work colleagues. Free otherwise.

Re: Cool cars we used to own

I had one a while ago and it was fun to drive but I had another one more recently and, after having an Elise, the MR2 no longer could cut it. The lightweight still had a good effect on the handling but the steering was so poor compared to the Elise it just reminded me of what I was missing.

Re: Cool cars we used to own

The only interesting car that I've owned that wasn't a Lotus was 998cc Mini Cooper. Fun to drive but the long centre-branch exhaust always split because of the engine moving under torque loadings and rain meant misfires. Had to change the rear subframe - horrible job. Sold it buy a Lotus Elan +2 whi...

Re: workshop manual electrical section

Hi Richard,

I recently acquired a set of service notes which, I'm sure, has a compete set of wiring diagrams for all model years. My car is a 1988 model so don't need up to 1986 diagrams. I'll pm you.
