Re: Carb Balancing

Hope it makes a difference. One other thing, if you find that you can't get all 4 reading the same no matter how much you adjust them, there may be a vacuum leak. Most likely a split vacuum hose or the carb to inlet manifold.

Cheers

Re: Carb Balancing

I got one a few years back from Eurocarb, the Dellorto parts supplier. You're right, you have to remove the vacuum port plugs, then fit the threaded brass tubes so you can connect the rubber pipes. I balanced a length of timber from the roof to the bonnet and hanged the device from that so I could s...

Re: 912 HC Power curve

Hi Tony, the Lotus sales brochures have a graph showing torque and BHP on the tech spec page. I've got a 1986 and 1987 brochure showing the graph for the 912 Excel SE 912 engine, they look the same. Rather than post a picture here's the figures, RPM, torque in lbf.ft., power in BHP; 2,000 130 50 3,0...

Re: Battery

I fitted a Yuasa YBX3075 to my SE a year ago and so far so good. My Mazda 6 had a Yuasa from new and that lasted 9 years, so they appear to be decent batteries.

Re: Door lights

Each light also has a 3 way switch, i'd check them as well as ther door switches;

Switch forward - lamp operates via the door switches and should go off after 10 seconds once door closed.
Switch in middle position - lamp off.
Switch rearward - lamp on.

Good luck

Re: Wiper motor

Hi Tony, I had a look and mine hasn't got the bracket either, even seeing that area of the scuttle is hard work. Mirror on a stick and a torch were called for. You'd have no chance getting in there to reach any fasteners. Probably fitted before the heater went in on the assembly line, then impossibl...

Re: Wiper motor

There's two lessons to learn from this saga! 1) Take pictures, more than you think you may need. It's surprising when you need a particular reference point. 2) Go back and look at the pictures you took! I found some photos from when I originally rebuilt the wiper motor 7 years ago. And thankfully on...

Re: Wiper motor

I think my wiper woes may be self-inflicted! I don't think the park switch has gone out of sync, I think I've put the wiper wheelbox on to the cable tubing back to front  The parts diagrams are not much use as they don't show the various parts in situ, just exploded views. I'm trying to find s...

Re: Wiper motor

I think I may have worked this out, the park switch is operated by a cam on the underside of the gearwheel. On the topside of the wheel is the pivot for the arm that pushes and pulls the drive cable. The gearwheel can be fitted in two different positions. One gives park with the drive cable extended...

Wiper motor

Having solved one electrical issue I now have another to sort out. The wiper stalled halfway across the screen and couldn't be persuaded back into action so out with the motor and I find I have a broken drive cable. In goes a new cable and I now find that the wiper sweeps back onto the bonnet from t...

Re: Excel SE 86 model year alternator

Thanks to Tony for the tip about the wiper wheelbox, the gear teeth had seen better days. Maybe the result of the broken drive cable, but badly worn - turned the gear 180 degrees to present fresh teeth and all is good. I've even got full speed wipers now! The motor bracket is hard work, until I trie...

Re: Excel SE 86 model year alternator

Thanks Tony, will do. And all fasteners will have a dab of studlock to stop things loosening off.

Re: Excel SE 86 model year alternator

Got the wiper motor out, much easier having done it once before. The drive cable spring has snapped, so new cable on order and should be an easy fix. With the motor still connected to it's wiring I was able to test it and I was surprised that I had all 3 functions: intermittent, half speed, full spe...

Fitted the new alternator and now getting more like 14v above idle, also starting better. Wiper has packed up though!

Re: Speedometer Needle Bouncing

Could be the speedo cable is binding at low speed, also check that it's secure at both ends. There's also a speedo drive off the gearbox, I think it's mentioned in the service schedule as something to oil or grease periodically. If cable and drive are good it may be an early sign that the speedo is ...
