Re: Wiper motor...again!

Great tip Alan, that will come in handy for future jobs I'm sure. Here's a few pictures showing the neoprene layer cake approach; Old and new wheelboxes, the old one wasn't clamping the cable ferrules properly, but more importantly there was too much clearance for the cable - that's what chewed the ...

Re: Wiper motor...again!

Update on my wiper problem. Got a new wheelbox from SJ and it's sorted the problem, the old one not only had damaged teeth, the cable was not held close enough to the gear cog - damage to teeth then eventually the cable jumped the cog and things got out of synch. I wanted to fit a new spacer, part n...

Re: Wiper motor...again!

Thanks Tony, I think a new wheelbox should fix the problem. I got the motor assembly out of the dash today and the wheelbox cog teeth are shot, even the ones that were good when I fitted the new cable last year. I think the cable has been moving off the cog teeth, the curved part of the wheelbox cas...

Re: Wiper motor...again!

Thanks for the replies. I know people have posted on here before about replacement wheel boxes, I'll check to see if they managed to find new ones that match our spec.

Cheers

Wiper motor...again!

I'm getting fed up with the factory windscreen wiper set up on my 1986 SE. I rebuilt the motor some years ago then last year the drive cable snapped so that was replaced, now the wiper arm has swept onto the bodywork! I took the wiper arm off to check the spline wasn't slipping, seemed good so refit...

Re: Waistline Trim

I've started this job on my 1985 built SE, the trim on the body joint is coming away by itself so I think that won't put up much of a fight. Pronbably best done on a warm day after the sun has softened up the plastic. The part that has put up a fight is the plastic strip under the trim on the doors,...

Re: boot lid catch has failed

So can you lock and unlock the catch, the catch can be turned, but it doesn't release the boot lid? Or is it the lock barrel that's bust?

Re: Carb Balancing

Hope it makes a difference. One other thing, if you find that you can't get all 4 reading the same no matter how much you adjust them, there may be a vacuum leak. Most likely a split vacuum hose or the carb to inlet manifold.

Cheers

Re: Carb Balancing

I got one a few years back from Eurocarb, the Dellorto parts supplier. You're right, you have to remove the vacuum port plugs, then fit the threaded brass tubes so you can connect the rubber pipes. I balanced a length of timber from the roof to the bonnet and hanged the device from that so I could s...

Re: 912 HC Power curve

Hi Tony, the Lotus sales brochures have a graph showing torque and BHP on the tech spec page. I've got a 1986 and 1987 brochure showing the graph for the 912 Excel SE 912 engine, they look the same. Rather than post a picture here's the figures, RPM, torque in lbf.ft., power in BHP; 2,000 130 50 3,0...

Re: Battery

I fitted a Yuasa YBX3075 to my SE a year ago and so far so good. My Mazda 6 had a Yuasa from new and that lasted 9 years, so they appear to be decent batteries.

Re: Door lights

Each light also has a 3 way switch, i'd check them as well as ther door switches;

Switch forward - lamp operates via the door switches and should go off after 10 seconds once door closed.
Switch in middle position - lamp off.
Switch rearward - lamp on.

Good luck

Re: Wiper motor

Hi Tony, I had a look and mine hasn't got the bracket either, even seeing that area of the scuttle is hard work. Mirror on a stick and a torch were called for. You'd have no chance getting in there to reach any fasteners. Probably fitted before the heater went in on the assembly line, then impossibl...

Re: Wiper motor

There's two lessons to learn from this saga! 1) Take pictures, more than you think you may need. It's surprising when you need a particular reference point. 2) Go back and look at the pictures you took! I found some photos from when I originally rebuilt the wiper motor 7 years ago. And thankfully on...

Re: Wiper motor

I think my wiper woes may be self-inflicted! I don't think the park switch has gone out of sync, I think I've put the wiper wheelbox on to the cable tubing back to front  The parts diagrams are not much use as they don't show the various parts in situ, just exploded views. I'm trying to find s...
