Please add my name also, if you haven't sent the card yet.

Best wishes to Oliver Winterbottom.

He gave a great talk at an East Anglia Lotus Club meeting.

Re: Practical Classics Classic Car & Restoration (NEC) 31/3-

What a great show!!! Lovely to see you all and learn so many odd "little gems" in a short time. I like how there are so very many enterprising "car people" with stands & products to sell. And chat/free about the stuff. So, despite worn-out feet, I'm coming to the show again today. See you there. Mick.

Breaking / disposing of an Excel

Hi All, I have a (damaged - Cat 'B') green Excel that had to be 'evicted' from my brother's farm recently, but the difficulty now is that it sits under my carport where I really want to park my Lotus Elise. (Sorry if that's swearing - yes, I love more than one!!) As it is Cat 'B' it can never go bac...

YELLOW EXCEL FOR SALE

Hi All, Have listed my Yellow Excel (with burst gaskets following a trackday!!) on Ebay. The carbs were so well set up it ran better than my other (84) Excel that was bought near-new from the Lotus Dealer in Norwich. Sadly, with years passing by and my other Excel needing attention, I've had to deci...

Water pump replacement

Hi All After 24 years of not letting me down without warning, My Excel obviously had a major problem when I routinely went to drive it the other day. There was a screeching sound and a friend said he smelt smoke. I quickly stopped the engine & closer investigation confirmed there was a fine line of ...

Re: Binding brakes

I think dirt can somehow form or get past the seals over a long period of time. I had the 'binding brakes' problem & a recon master cylinder solved it. Just recently I found that the brake pedal kept moving towards the floor, suggesting an air leak, & the servo didn't seem to be working properly. I'...

Starter circuit problems

Well, I have fitted a new (reconditioned) starter motor and fitted an earthing lead between the solenoid casing and the earthing bolt that holds the coil to the bulkhead. [Looked at an another Excel & noticed it had one.] This is probably a good idea anyway, as it would save the "melting speedo" pro...

Starter circuit problems

Hi Steve I have tried a large lead between battery -ve and the engine block. This hasn't made any difference - still no start. Am going to try it with a battery & jump leads (beside the front of the car) going direct to the starter motor. Then using a bit of wire to "jump" the solenoid bit in place ...

Starter circuit problems

Hi My normally good Excel won't start  and I suspect trouble like a bad earth or cracked heavy duty cable. (All this is nothing to do with ignition circuits. They are a separate bad dream!) I have the Service Notes & wonder if the Start Relay is failing. Where is the Start Relay physically loca...

Lights won’t popup when I flash

You may have a problem with the stalk switch. It can sometimes be a relay (located behind/under the left hand light pod).

Do make sure it isn't just a blown fuse first.

The drivers handbook and Service Notes are helpful.

Mick.

Please keep me active.
(Although my Excel isn't due to a failed starter motor, it is only a
temporary situation - love keeping my swerve arrow on the road.)

Hope it's not too late to say one for me please!

With a few of these around we might be able to sort out a guide on what to do and what not to do.

Suspension problems

Hi John, Yes, it does sound like your springs are 'giving' a bit too much. I've noticed a mild case of something similar when 4-up over an especially bumpy bit of road. There are a few possible causes and a good inspection with the wheels off might help you to decide what's needed. First thing to ch...

Change from early to late radiator mountings

Hi Mike, Nice to hear from you. I think I must have seen you & your car when it was new - at a 'Days' open evening in Cambridge. Would that be right? At the time I only had a rally mini. The standard of work that I saw at Days left me in awe. Even before getting to the Reception Desk, you passed an ...
