Spot on with the diagnosis ...thanks, I bypassed the earth directly to a good earth & all works fine...now just have to find the bad bit & fix it !

These have been cluttering up my garage for a while, they were in the boot of my Excel when I got her but clearly do not belong. I guess they belong to an Elite or Eclat by the appearance. One cap on the radiator header tank means that is a low comp, non-SE engine by my understanding, black cam covers appropriate,

I saw a white Excel yesterday on the A146 Beccles to Norwich Road, looked very nice and sounded brilliant, sorry I was in a Mazda.
Today there was a red one on Somerleyton Road in Lowestoft, perhaps you’d been to the show in Corton? Again sounded great as I was walking up the road.

I once had an old MG which had a concealed switch that earthed the coil. Try to start it with the key, all the electrics work, but the b....y thing won't star, thief thinks it's just a knackered old car.
