Re: Iron cross wheels

This is an early Excel that hasn't been restored or re painted https://am3pap002files.storage.live.com/y4m2q6fFKWpS76k1eRKT_XovlysYwcRaZtVHPD7hVfG6YlgRTZsHsSB9BqlS6a0-1G89YzbtlLqZLakXuasdb-58pB-23CRA_cg8T8PJDtCkX5xIBlY0sxmfogMqDQlUzn13EPWa1d6kFin3CRH3xG3rG1ZGQxXyPpPyN5hUgXf1ZO2Q8qOXIboQtFbb_Esjvw8?w...

Re: Leather Repair and re-colour : What product suppliers don’t tell you.

Great write-up Tony. :) So if (like me) you just had the usual superficial scuffs on the drivers seat (side) bolster with no rips/tears, and the rest of the seat was fine, which products would you use to fix (filler/colour etc) - and could you just get away with treating it locally (ie not refinish ...

Re: Iron cross wheels

This picture shows the clean lines of the Toyota wheels quite well. I think the perspective on the other picture above doesn't do them justice (?semi-fish eye lens?). https://dm2305files.storage.live.com/y4mGN_eHZhgV6k6C8Q4J0-1fIPnR2TMhqJq_xOID0DpLr95Ul1HzfPWx6FfkYoakFvF8SJqfv5w9DDR91wRghU4LDk17Hiko...

Re: Possibly Found a Cheap Oil-water Heat Exchanger

Great idea!! Where do plumb in the water hoses in the existing system? You would have to modifiy the Excel's existing coolant hose route. My Clan has the exchanger within the auxillary /heater circuit using 5/8 'heater hose'. Other Clan owners plumb the exchanger direct into the top radiator hose, ...

Re: Excel SE Toolkit

Just borrowing this thread on tool kits, to ask a Q. Are there many owners looking for replacement tools lost from a standard SE kit? Mine has been missing for 21 years at least. Don't know if PO has it ..he's seemed to have disapeared into the North Sea (oil rig worker). Maybe get them re-issued b...

Re: Purge Pump.. alternatives?

If I ever I get myself to a meeting one day (say a LITP), I'd organise a 'hot start competition'. ... a timed event. It would go like this: 1) Everyone warm their engine by idling until the fans cut-in. 2) Switch-off and leave for 3 minutes. 3) prepare to start as you would normally (open throttle o...

Re: ‘84 Excel

Agree with Pete, the early narrow-bodied Excels look right. Especially with those wheels ( 14 inch Toyota black and silver cross ones also work well with the design). Would be interested to hear how you think the Elise compares to the Excel performance-wise. I once chased an early Elise in my 89SE a...

Re: Purge Pump.. alternatives?

The classic need for this device is to save face after filling-up with petrol (especially on a hot day -but not exclusively so). You return to the car after paying for petrol, and it won't start (airbox fumes = too rich as pointed-out previously) . And the bloke who was previously admiring your car ...

Beautiful cars!

Including the 'RADFORD prototype'! :)

What's the Beans 'box and Salisbury diff sounding like on the trip?

My diff on the old 501 had a bit of a whine above 90mph. Beans box was lovely though (I'm told I was lucky).

Re: Rear cross member corrosion - Advice needed!

Yes the description seems to match Andy's reference photos. I'd put (Pete's) money on it! Replace them with stainless steel items and Bob's your uncle. I got my stainless ones from SJS many years ago for £21 each. Don't know about current availability, or prices. The inner seatbelt bolts can ...

Re: Rear cross member corrosion - Advice needed!

Advanced corrosion on an Excel chassis is really rare. You need to find out exactly which bit is corroded - get a photograph. They aren't just talking about the rear seat belt anchor plates, for example. which most definitely do corrode. Pete +1 for Pete's thoughts. It's gotta be the seat belt anch...

Re: Rough cold running

How does the crank case breather fit in? Is it still secure and together? Good point - also check that the hoses fitted to the brown valve are the right way around. Mind you, the top one is always open so wouldn't explain the air leak sealing when greater than 60C. Also check connections to the ora...

Re: Rough cold running

In summary following the video review (I suggest): 1) The air leak causes very weak running when cold (AFR > 15:1 which need lots of ign advance to run) AND simultaneously 2) The same air leak prevents full vacuum to the dizzy even though the green valve is working as it should (ie likely the leak i...
