Re: ‘84 Excel

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Hi Chris, the reg of yours is very close isn’t it! I’d love to see yours, is it a similar spec? I saw this one on the car and classic site, was fairly close for me to have a look. Externally my car is identical, the interior is red what colour is yours? I live in...

Re: ‘84 Excel

Your car looks to be in lovely condition, worth checking the age of the tyres before you push it too hard around the corners!

Out of interest is this the one off EBay? If so my number plate is A705 HLH so closely related to yours!

Cheers Chris

Re: Carb rebuild

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I have ordered the book by Des Hammill, will probably have a go myself. If it all goes wrong will send them off to eurocarb.

Re: Misfire....

Good idea on the leads I'll try swapping them and see whether the problem moves. I ran out of light but will also whip the plugs out and see how they are looking. I did change the cambelt recently and although I double checked all the marks lined up, might be worth me checking again incase it is a t...

Misfire....

The car has a constant misfire that I assumed would clear once it warmed up but does not appear to be the case. Disconnecting the rev limiter has made no difference. It would appear to be cylinder 2 as when I disconnect the lead it made no difference. Will probably order new plugs / leads / dist cap...

Re: Headlights

Thanks for all the advice. They now work! Turns out it was the head light switch. Also the right fog light has somehow fixed itself, each year I have to run a wire from the left to the right one to get it through the MOT which I then remove afterwards. For the first time since I have owned the car i...

Headlights

It has been 6 years since the excel was last on the road and I have decided it is about time to get it MOT'd again. Before that happens I need to sort the head lights. When I turn them on the side lights work fine, but the headlights do not turn on, plus the lights do not flip up. I am guessing it m...

Re: New owner 84 Excel

Hi Dave, I think I recognise this car. If I am correct it was for sale in Cheltenham about 5 years ago, the car was owned by a car magazine photographer and when I spoke to the owner it sounded as though it had been very well looked after, at some point having had the engine rebuilt (backed up with ...

Re: Differences in the "Real World"

The white 84 excel was for sale 3-4 years ago in Cheltenham. I couldn't look at the car because the then owner was busy for a few weeks and when he finally came back to me I had bought my current car. Over the phone he seemed a decent chap, the body / engine was supposed to be in good condition with...

Hi Dave, good luck with the project, if you get no takers on the body and end up scrapping it I would be interested in taking the Toyota wheels off you. Thanks Chris

Fog Lights

My car has just failed it's MOT on the offside rear fog light. At the MOT Station I had a quick look and and when I removed the holder the bulb is actually glowing very slightly but not enough to see it once it is back in the light lens. The nearside is fine however when I swap this holder to the of...

Re: Which Oil filter

I ordered the mahle oc141 from opie oils but the filter was on backorder, so left that on order and bought a mann w920/21 to give that a go. It looked a well manufactured filter, but the oil pressure took 7-8 seconds to build even when hot. Interestingly the only pressure at tickover even after a ha...

Re: Celebration On Pistonheads

I have had an insurance company write off a car worth considerably more for minor damage. I think for older cars as new parts are not always available or easy to find it is the easier option and saves them hassel. Personally i would view the car, that way you can get a feel for it, also look through...
