Re: Spot what's missing!

Could this be at the bottom of your ignition timing issues, or have you already sorted that?

Re: 1976 Elite 'The UFO' Restoration

I'd love to see a photo of the rigging for the headlamps! Sounds like a good set-up.

With the roads as they are I'd probably retain as much rubber as possible. You may also find that a lot of the original bushes are fine - the small inboard ones in the front upper arms seem to last very well. I've made tools to press out the front lower arm bushes - for use on a press.

Re: Spot what's missing!

That looks like the original washer that is supposed to have a countersunk screw in it, but the other picture shows a hex-headed bolt and standard washer??

Great work Neil - going to look really good once it's all covered. As Tony says - better than the Lotus original!

Re: 1976 Elite 'The UFO' Restoration

Great progress! Sounds like you'd be plenty competent to tack a full engine build - it's really pretty straightforward - and plenty of help at hand on here. You just need a few bits of measuring gear to make sure stuff is within spec. At least if you do it yourself you know it will be done properly!...

Re: Elite restoration begins!

Wow - I haven't heard of this! Thanks. The tow bar on my car was only fixed to the body - no chassis fixings - I can't imagine it getting up to any sort of speed without tearing the back of the car off!

Really interesting though! Anyone else heard of this!

Workshop notes says "8mm positive inset". Front wheel drive cars are usually radically different.

Re: Coolant Expansion Tank Repair

+1 for JB Weld - buy the one that's not quick setting - it's the strongest. Use it to bond on a patch as Bash suggested rather than just blobbing it on. It's absolutely essential that both parts are grease-free and keyed. Maybe use a big Jubilee clip to keep it in place while it sets.

Re: Coolant Expansion Tank Repair

Mine has a small pinhole in it as well - plus I moved the mounting bracket to allow a different fixing position, so not much help I'm afraid!
